The AX/4000 by Spirent is a Mainframe Chassis designed to meet the diverse timing, distribution, and cooling requirements of the user. This chassis is equipped with sixteen slots, enabling the seamless installation of unit test modules and port interfaces, all while ensuring optimal cooling and performance. Each test module connected to the AX/4000 possesses a unique address, facilitating individual access and independent operation. With this feature, multiple users can effortlessly access and utilize modules within the same chassis simultaneously.

The AX/4000 boasts an Ethernet control module that plugs directly into the first slot of the chassis. Boasting an embedded computer system with its own CPU, RAM, flash ROM, and UNIX operating system, the control module provides an advanced 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet interface to the chassis. The AX/4000's control module goes above and beyond by offering a wide array of timing options to suit unique testing requirements. With its timestamp generator and BNC connectors, this module enables seamless synchronization of multiple chassis. Furthermore, it features a GPS interface, allowing the chassis to derive a timestamp and frequency reference from a GPS receiver. Harnessing the power of GPS, geographically separated chassis systems operating in GPS mode can achieve remarkable one-way, point-to-point transfer delay measurements with astonishing accuracy of less than one microsecond.

Equipped with BITS input connectors, the AX/4000 facilitates precise and reliable cell generation based on precision or common clock references. This functionality proves invaluable in a wide range of applications, including AAL 1 CBR tests and accurate cell throughput testing of ATM devices. Through Building Integrated Timing Supply (BITS) input connectors leveraging, the user can ensure synchronized and accurate testing. To further enhance the testing experience, the AX/4000 includes the AX/4000 System Software.. Compatible with both Microsoft Windows-based PCs and Sun Solaris-based workstations, this software enables remote connections to the control module, reservation of test modules, configuration and execution of test scenarios, and in-depth analysis of test results. Furthermore, it provides a wealth of additional utilities, including resource utilization reporting, off-line configuration and demonstration capabilities, and seamless software downloads.
