Spirent DLS 5405

The Spirent DLS 5405 is a noise injector unit designed to facilitate high bandwidth communication between a noise generator and a wireline simulator. This compact unit, measuring 1U in height, is designed to be conveniently mounted in a standard 19" rack. The key functionality of the DLS 5405 lies in its ability to inject distinct VDSL2 noise signals at both ends of the wireline simulator. It boasts an impressive noise injection bandwidth of up to 40 MHz, and its output level can reach a maximum of -3 dBm for a signal with a crest factor of 5.0. To ensure versatile connectivity, the unit is equipped with two RJ-45 jacks on each side and four 50 Ω unbalanced BNC noise inputs (two on each side).

The DLS 5405 operates in conjunction with the DLS 5500, which supplies the noise profiles required for its functionality. It is essential to connect two noise profiles to each side of the unit. The two noise signal inputs per side are combined by the unit and delivered differentially at the injection point (DUT and Wireline jacks) on the front panel. When the DLS 5405 is powered off or during startup, the injection network is disconnected from the outputs (DUT and Wireline jacks). However, upon receiving a command from the DLS 5500, the injection network is connected to the outputs, resulting in a slight loading of the line. It is worth noting that the normally closed contacts between the DUT and Wireline jack are momentarily opened exclusively for micro-interruption tests, remaining closed otherwise.

The front panel of the DLS 5405 comprises two noise injection points on both sides. Each injection point features two RJ-45 jacks, allowing convenient connection of both the DUT and the wireline simulator. Additionally, the front panel incorporates two status lights. A green Power LED indicates proper power connection and the absence of internal faults, while a green Remote LED signifies successful communication between the unit and the noise generator. For control purposes, the DLS 5405 relies on an RS-232 connection to the noise generator. To establish the necessary noise signal connections, the four signals generated by the DLS 5500 are linked to the four unbalanced BNC inputs located at the rear of the unit, utilizing four 50 Ω coaxial cables. Lastly, it is crucial to establish a serial connection between the DLS 5405 and the DLS 5500; failure to do so will render the injection unit inoperable.
