The Spirent DLS-400A is an advanced Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Loop (ADSL) wireline simulator designed to accurately replicate the behavior of twisted pair copper cables, commonly known as wirelines, at high frequencies. With its versatile capabilities, this simulator offers over 30 different configurations of these cables, making it a highly versatile tool for testing various digital transmission products. One of the primary applications of the DLS-400A is in the testing of ADSL transmission products, although it can be utilized for testing a wide range of digital transmission equipment.
Controlled through software compatible with Windows 95 computers, the DLS-400A offers seamless integration into larger test systems with its IEEE 488 and RS-232 interfaces. The control software empowers users to perform numerous functions, such as setting the IEEE 488 address, configuring impairments cards, selecting the desired testing loop, specifying impairments and their parameters, choosing Common Mode impairments, editing longitudinal voltage, loading impairments from various standards, as well as saving and loading custom settings. The initial screen of the DLS-400A software provides a convenient interface for selecting the corresponding system configuration and preferred communication mode.
The main control screen of the DLS-400A features a schematic diagram representing the simulated loop. Initially, the diagram shows the bypass loop, and upon powering on the simulator, it undergoes a series of self-tests. These tests include verifying the validity of the EPROM checksum, checking the functionality of the non-volatile RAM and self-contained battery, and ensuring the proper functioning of the microcontroller. In the event of a test failure, the simulator indicates the error by flashing the POWER LED in red. If all tests pass successfully, the DLS-400A reinstates the previously active loop configuration.
The DLS-400A achieves accurate reproduction of the AC and DC characteristics of real telephony cables through the utilization of networks comprising passive discrete components (resistors, inductors, and capacitors). It incorporates hundreds of cable simulation segments that can be interconnected in various configurations and line lengths. The simulator accurately replicates cable behavior up to 2.0 MHz, and in some configurations, it can emulate higher frequencies. As a result, it proves highly effective for testing ADSL transmissions with speeds of up to 7 Mbit/s. With its extensive capabilities, the DLS-400A provides 28 standard test loops for evaluating ADSL performance, and users also have the ability to create additional loops, including bridge tap settings on either or both sides.
