The Spirent GSS6100 is a specialized GPS L1 production signal generator designed for production test applications. It can be utilized as a general-purpose laboratory signal generator when combined with PC software. With the GSS6100, users can generate a single simulated GPS L1, C/A signal or SBAS satellite signal (WAAS or EGNOS) by selecting the desired signal prior to simulation.
Operating at the GPS L1 frequency (1.57542 GHz), the GSS6100 generates a GPS or SBAS RF satellite signal. The carrier is modulated with the relevant pseudo-random ranging code and data message, allowing users to select the ranging code and define the data message as needed. The signal's Doppler shift and power level can be fully programmed, enabling acquisition tests under different signal conditions. By controlling the carrier and code phase, the GSS6100 can simulate ionospheric dispersion effects. Leveraging direct digital waveform synthesis, this signal generator offers a cost-effective and stable solution with low life-cycle support costs.
The GSS6100 offers two modes of operation: primary mode and alternative mode. In primary mode, GPS/SBAS message generation is typically controlled through the integral GPIB (IEEE-488) interface, with USB and RS232 support also available. Using the SimCHAN software application package for Windows, users can control the signal generator as an instrument through its intuitive graphical point-and-click interface when connected to a suitable PC via USB or IEEE-488. In alternative mode, the GSS6100 continuously generates a pre-defined GPS signal upon power-up, which is useful when a continuous GPS source is required for testing. During alternative mode operation, users can define parameters such as PRN and power level for broadcasting.
Enclosed in a 2U, full-width rack-mountable case, the GSS6100 is powered through the AC mains connector and features a rear-panel mounted fan for forced-air cooling. The primary RF output is located on the front, while other connections are accessible from the rear panel. Calibration adjustments can also be made via the rear panel. The frequency accuracy is ensured by a high-stability ovenized crystal oscillator internally installed, with the option to use its signal externally. Alternatively, the GSS6100 can synchronize with an external frequency reference signal, with the frequency of the external reference being selectable through software. Additionally, the generator can be synchronized with other test equipment through its 1PPS input and output signals.
