The GX-1420B by Spirent is a Gigabit Copper SmartCard designed for comprehensive testing of Gigabit and 100 Mbps Ethernet networks over copper wire. It offers a range of advanced features and functionalities to facilitate accurate performance analysis and validation of switches and routers, adhering to the industry-standard 802.3ab specification. With a single-port configuration, the GX-1420B supports capture, analysis, and wire-rate traffic generation. The card utilizes an RJ-45 interface, enabling connections of a maximum of 100 meters through the use of a CAT 5 cable. It can be seamlessly installed into either the SMB-200 or SMB-2000 chassis, ensuring flexibility in deployment.
The GX-1420B includes various transmit functions. These functions include continuous mode, single burst mode, multi-burst mode, continuous multi-burst mode, and echo mode. The card also allows the user to configure a custom background fill or choose from predefined patterns such as incrementing and decrementing byte, incrementing and decrementing word, random data, all zeros, all ones, or other patterns. Transmit functions further incorporate up to three varying data fields, namely VFD1, VFD2, and VFD3, accommodating different data transmission needs. Additionally, the GX-1420B supports the configuration of alternate streams of transmitted data to simulate specific traffic scenarios, allowing for controlled generation of errored traffic, management frames, or pause frames.
On the receiving side, the GX-1420B offers a range of receive functions. Two independent triggers, consisting of 1 to 6 bytes each, can be set to count specific packets. The trigger offset is fully adjustable from the first byte to the last byte of the frame, including the CRC, with 1-byte increments. The card also features counters to display rates and events, including packets exceeding 1,518 bytes in size, undersized packets and fragments below 64 bytes, and IP frames with checksum errors. Latency measurements are available to facilitate internetworking analysis, allowing for evaluation across different network technologies such as Ethernet-to-Token Ring, Ethernet-to-Ethernet, and Ethernet-to-ATM. Moreover, the GX-1420B supports the generation of Pause commands for flow control testing and boasts packet capture capabilities, accommodating between 86 and 2,048 legal sized packets depending on packet length. The card is also capable of capturing oversized and undersized packets, providing comprehensive analysis capabilities.
