The Spirent LAN-3111A is a SmartMetrics module with a fiber that boasts fast Ethernet, designed for network testing purposes. It offers six ports capable of generating equivalent traffic to a LAN that is fully-loaded, accommodating a maximum of 1,000 end-user devices. With full duplex operation, it seamlessly integrates into SMB-600 and SMB-6000B chassis setups. The primary function of the LAN-3111A module is to test the interoperability of devices in Layer 3, although it can also assess the performance and functionality of Layer 2. Leveraging a 100Base-FX optical fiber interface, this module supports full wire-rate traffic analysis and generation. It utilizes a wavelength laser of 1300 nm and employs a LC fiber, RJ-format connector that is modular for optimal connectivity.

One notable feature of the LAN-3111A is its SmartWindow graphical user interface (GUI), which simplifies the execution of tests such as frame loss assessment, stream latency measurement, and sequence tracking. These tests can be performed on one device or extended to networks that are routed in a complex configuration. The module supports SmartLib application integration, enabling automated test integration using C, C++, or TcI programming languages. The LAN-3111A incorporates data integrity checking, which facilitates payload data verification through the device under test (DUT). The LAN-3111A has a port density that is large, which facilitates efficient simulation of intricate and large network configurations, allowing for effective testing and development of Layer 2 and Layer 3 device functions and interoperability. Various applications are supported by the module, including SmartLib Programming Library, SmartApplications, SmartVoIPQoS, AST II, SmartxDSL, SmartWindow, ScriptCenter, SmartFlow, SmartMulticastIP, SmartTCP, and SmartCableModem Test. The SmartMetrics functionality of this module emulates live network traffic, providing valuable insights into frame relationships and timing. This enables users to evaluate the performance and functionality of devices under load. SmartMetrics tests encompass sequence tracking, latency per stream, raw tags, latency over time, latency distribution, and frame variation. To operate the LAN-3111A module, a compatible Windows program running on a PC is required, along with one slot for chassis integration.
