The LAN-3201A by Spirent is a high-performance SmartMetrics Gigabit Test Module designed to assess and validate the performance, interoperability, and functionality of Layer 3 and Layer 2 devices. With its comprehensive capabilities, this module enables full wire-rate traffic generation and analysis, replicating the traffic load of a fully-loaded LAN with up to 8,192 end user devices. The LAN-3201A adheres to the IEEE 802.3z draft specification guidelines and supports an impressive 8,192 streams, resulting in 512 million flows.

Primarily focused on Gigabit Ethernet routers, the LAN-3201A plays a crucial role in evaluating key performance parameters under both typical and extreme traffic conditions. It proves quality assurance, final regression testing, and firmware upgrades. Leveraging advanced tracking capabilities and histogram analysis, the LAN-3201A facilitates long duration tests and offers in-depth insights into stream behavior. This module is equipped with advanced features such as the ability to generate and accept VLAN tagged frames (802.1p, 802.1q, and 802.3ac) and respond to 802.3x flow control commands. Its 1MB capture buffer allows for the logging and exporting of filtered events to protocol analysis equipment, while also supporting IP source/destination increments.

The LAN-3201A also enables network-wide Network Layer QoS analysis through IP precedence bit utilization and provides optional Data Integrity checks to detect bit errors in Layer 3 forwarding devices. Notably, each stream can be independently controlled and scheduled, enhancing the flexibility of testing scenarios. This module further includes IP header checksum generation and validation, an IP index that increments with each transmitted frame, and the option for UDP/TCP port numbers to increment during burst count underflow. By emulating real network traffic, the LAN-3201A's SmartMetrics tests enable users to assess the functionality and performance of devices under varying loads. These tests offer valuable information about frame relationships and timing, facilitating evaluation of throughput, frame loss, latency, and latency distribution. Furthermore, the module provides raw tags that allow frames to be stored and sent to applications without any modifications or filtering applied to the stream tags.
