The LAN-3310A by Spirent is a professional-grade GBIC-based 2-Port SmartMetrics Ethernet Module designed specifically for testing the performance and interoperability of networking devices. This module offers users the ability to efficiently measure critical metrics such as true load capacity, latency, and IP frame sequencing. It supports data transmission speeds of up to 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps) over both single-mode and multi-mode fiber connections. Notably, the LAN-3310A can simulate the presence of millions of clients and servers, enabling comprehensive network system testing.

One of the key features of the LAN-3310A is its capability to provide per-flow metrics for millions of IP flows, allowing for the assessment of quality of service (QoS) provided by devices with Diffserv, MPLS, IP QoS, and VLAN functionality. The module ensures full wire-rate traffic and analysis, adhering to the 10BaseTx/100Base-TX IEEE specification in 10/100 Mbps mode and the IEEE 802.3z draft specification in Gigabit mode. When combined with other modules, the LAN-3310A can effectively test high-speed internetworking between 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet, as well as 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet, ATM, Frame Relay, or Packet over SONET (POS) devices. This module finds primary applications in evaluating key performance parameters of 10/100/1000 Mbps networking devices, qualifying the Mbps, conducting stress and negative testing, and performing comparative analysis of Mbps networking devices.

The LAN-3310A's ports operate independently, supporting auto-negotiation and frame sizes ranging from 40 to 16,384 bytes. Users can configure each wire-traffic generation to have a fixed frame size or random frame sizes distributed uniformly. The LAN-3310A has the ability to stress routers by generating millions of flows per stream, thereby requiring the router to perform a distinct routing decision for each frame. It is equipped with a capture memory capacity of 16 MB, facilitating the logging and exporting of events to external protocol analysis equipment. The module also features arbitrary stream sequencing, enabling the mixing of different frame rates and the generation and response to 802.3x flow control commands. Furthermore, this module incorporates SmartMetrics testing capabilities, including throughput, sequence tracking per stream, latency over time, latency per stream, and latency variation.
