It offers an open architecture and stands as the world's first fully-featured network-to-application layer network performance testing solution. Notably, the LAN-3311A is distinguished by its GBIC-based design, providing support for 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps) over both single and multi-mode fiber.

One of the key features of the LAN-3311A is its capability to generate per-flow metrics for millions of IP flows. This feature is instrumental in evaluating the quality of service delivered by various networking devices enabled with BGP, MPLS, OSPF, IP QoS, VoIP, DiffServ, and VLAN technologies. When combined with other modules, the LAN-3311A facilitates high-speed internetworking tests between 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet and 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet, ATM, or Packet over SONET devices.

The LAN-3311A features built-in traffic shaping and traffic generation capabilities, allowing for faster test setup. This module proves invaluable for measuring the performance of network embedded applications, such as routing, load balancing, Multicast IP, Mobile IP, and security. It also offers the ability to simulate "smart" protocols across various OSI layers while transmitting real-world data. Additionally, the LAN-3311A supports the execution of custom and third-party applications, thereby enabling the evaluation of key performance parameters for 10/100/1000 Mbps networking devices, including switches, routers, VPN systems, cache servers, and load balancers under both typical and extreme traffic load conditions.

In terms of specifications, the LAN-3311A provides support for auto negotiation, frame sizes ranging from 40 to 16,384 bytes, and ping and ARP functionalities. Its ports operate independently, and it boasts stream-based, wire-rate traffic generation at a remarkable rate of up to 1,448,095 frames per second. The module can generate up to 512 independent IP streams (peer-to-peer), analyze up to 64K streams, and offers per-port transmission mode control settings. With the LAN-3311A, millions of flows per stream can be instrumented, placing significant stress on routers by necessitating distinct routing decisions for each frame. Frame sizes can be set as fixed or generated randomly using a uniform distribution. Additionally, this module facilitates easier test setup through mask-based address skipping.
