The Spirent ML-5710A is a SmartMetrics 10 Mbps Ethernet SmartCard specifically designed for integration into SMB-200 or SMB-2000 chassis systems. This versatile SmartCard occupies a single slot within the chassis and can be configured in two modes: 10 Mbps Ethernet and USB. It is fully compatible with Spirent's SmartWindow and SmartLib applications, making it an ideal solution for broadband access devices like cable modems. The primary objective of the ML-5710A is to facilitate sophisticated flow-based and stream-based traffic generation while conducting real-time SmartMetrics analysis on received traffic at wire rate.

The ML-5710A incorporates several noteworthy features such as captured packets, packet length management, variable field data manipulation, background packet data fill patterns, VLAN tagging, transmit error insertion, Ethernet-only flow control, and SmartMetrics testing capabilities. Each port of the SmartCard can be configured to support up to 1,000 streams or virtual transmit engines (VTEs). These streams enable the generation of customizable Layer 3 data sequences. As a multilayer solution, the ML-5710A facilitates performance and interoperability testing of both Layer 2 (frame-based) and Layer 3 (stream-based) devices, including higher layer operations. It can replicate multilayer, mixed protocol traffic equivalent to a fully loaded LAN with up to 1,000 end-user devices.

The ML-5710A’s single RJ-45 interface allows the generation, monitoring, and capture of 10/100 Mbps Ethernet traffic at full wire speed in either full or half duplex mode. To evaluate the SmartCard's capabilities, it can be tested using SmartxDSL, which enables the conversion of twisted-pair telephone lines into access paths for high-speed and multimedia data communications. Additionally, the SmartCard can be paired with SmartAPI for Advanced Switch Tests II, a comprehensive testing solution for network switches, bridges, and routers. By leveraging the ML-5710A's USB port functionality, cable modem testing can be conducted, capitalizing on USB as an emerging transport medium for broadband access technologies.

When integrated into an SMB-200/2000 chassis, the ML-5710A can be tested using ScriptCenter. ScriptCenter is a platform-independent development tool that simplifies the process of writing and generating scripts. Compatible with Windows, UNIX, and Linux environments, ScriptCenter assists in test setup by offering customized or pre-defined scripts. Through the use of wizards, task/command inserts, and input screens, ScriptCenter automatically generates Tcl code. Additionally, a set of card-independent extended commands is provided, offering flexibility in scripting. The built-in editor allows users to set up anything from a comprehensive test scenario to specific routines or single commands.
