The Spirent ML-7710 is a highly advanced Multi-Layer SmartMetrics SmartCard designed specifically for facilitating the reproduction of large and intricate network configurations. Its primary purpose is to support the development, testing, and validation of Layer 2 and 3 device performance and interoperability. Compatible with both Ethernet and Fast Ethernet, the ML-7710 is a full/half duplex SmartCard that can seamlessly integrate into a SMB-200 or SMB-2000 chassis. Equipped with an IEEE 802.3 series 10/100Base-T interface and RJ-45 connectors, it operates at user-controlled or auto-negotiated line rates of 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps.
The ML-7710 delivers full line-rate transmit at both 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps speeds, ensuring high-performance operation. Its transmission capabilities include full/half duplex support and the ability to handle random frame lengths ranging from 24 to 1,600 bytes. Users have the option to select a specific background frame data fill pattern or choose from various pre-defined patterns, such as increasing/decreasing bytes, all zeros, or all ones, with user-defined selection available for the first 64 bytes. The ML-7710 also features comprehensive error detection, encompassing dribble bit, CRC, alignment, oversize, and undersize errors.
The ML-7710 presents multiple modes, including continuous multi-burst, single burst, multi-burst, and continuous transmission modes. Additionally, the SmartCard allows for the insertion of VFD1, VFD2, VFD3, and alternate frame data fields. The ML-7710 also encompasses two distinct transmit modes: stream-based transmit and management frame transmit. The stream-based transmit mode enables simultaneous variation of MAC addresses and IP addresses, facilitating diverse testing scenarios. In contrast, the management frame transmit mode allows users to configure the SmartCard's MAC and IP addresses, Netmask, and Gateway settings. This mode also permits the SmartCard to respond to ARP requests effectively.
Capturing network data is a crucial aspect of network testing, and the ML-7710 provides extensive capture features. It offers a capture buffer capable of storing up to 475 packets, ensuring the retention of valuable network information. Furthermore, the SmartCard calculates IP/TCP checksums in software, providing accurate verification of packet integrity. Multiple units can be synchronized using the group start/group stop feature, streamlining large-scale testing scenarios. Counter features of the ML-7710 include tracking transmitted and received frames/bytes, collisions, alignment errors, CRC errors, fragment/undersized frames, oversized frames, triggers received, and tags. Additionally, the SmartCard incorporates two six-byte triggers with configurable match options, allowing users to define specific trigger conditions.
