The Spirent SX/13a is a Data Link Simulator designed specifically to replicate the error and delay characteristics observed in satellite and long-distance terrestrial data links. This powerful simulator enables engineers to conduct network application testing and stress tests on new equipment in controlled and repeatable conditions, accurately emulating real-world network scenarios. Equipped with programmable delays, burst errors, and random bit errors, the SX/13a facilitates comprehensive bi-directional testing. Engineers can program complex sequences that incorporate various delay and error events, allowing them to simulate chronic or periodic conditions.
The SX/13a offers the capability to operate alongside an actual data link, enabling the introduction of additional errors or delays. This feature is particularly useful for simulating the effects of adding supplementary links to the system. Additionally, the simulator serves as a valuable tool for assessing the performance, operation, and reliability of multiplexers, encryptors, network applications, bridges, and other components. The SX/13a accommodates distinct error and delay settings for each direction of the full-duplex data stream, exploiting the two separate channels available in the simulator. Furthermore, it offers bypass and loopback modes as alternatives to the standard bi-directional flow when necessary.
By establishing direct connections between two equipment pieces, the SX/13a can effectively replace conventional data links like satellite connections, telephone networks, and WANs. The simulator also incorporates a built-in lithium battery that ensures backup of sequences and parameters in case of power loss or disconnection. The estimated battery life of this simulator is about 10 years. The user interface of the SX/13a consists of an eight-line, 40-character display panel and 28 operational keys for easy navigation and parameter input. Furthermore, plug-in interface modules are utilized to provide circuitry and cable connectors for a wide range of terminal equipment and physical interfaces. Users have the flexibility to install multiple interfaces, which can be selected via the front panel or a remote control interface.
Operating the SX/13a is a straightforward process, with the option for error targeting or extended T1/E1 simulation. The Extended T1/E1 Simulation Option allows complete programming and operation control from either the front panel or remote access via IEEE-488 or RS-232 remote control interfaces. The SX/13a features two fully independent channels, each with its own customizable error and delay settings. Additionally, each channel includes a Random Error Generator that simulates background errors during error burst gaps. For bipolar interfaces like DS1, the simulator can also be configured to inject Bipolar Violations (BPVs).
