The WN-3420 by Spirent is a WAN SmartCard specifically designed to facilitate frame-level testing at Frame Relay and PPP access devices, routers, and switches while maintaining full-wire rate performance. This SmartCard serves as an interface with a singular port, enabling the monitoring and generation of data network traffic over WAN links. The WN-3420 can also be employed in conjunction with other modules or SmartCard systems to conduct high-performance internetworking tests between various functions.
The WN-3420 supports a range of applications, including SmartLib Programming Library, ScriptCenter, SmartWindow, and SmartApplications. The key features of the WN-3420 include SmartApplications and SmartWindows graphical user interfaces (GUIs), which support the system and enhance user-friendliness for conducting sequence tracking, back-to-back, latency, packet loss, and throughput tracking tests. These tests can be executed on systems ranging from comprehensive internetworks to individual devices under test (DUT). Additionally, these test capabilities are accessible via the SmartLib API, enabling integration with diverse application sets.
Functionality of the WN-3420 encompasses PPP support, wherein individual IP and/or UDP traffic streams are transmitted across a PPP link. The SmartWindow application provides supplementary layer 3 test functionalities. The SmartCard also facilitates frame relay link support with a flexible Q.922 2-byte header format, coupled with RFC 1490 encapsulation support. Moreover, it enables the performance of latency measurements through a trigger mechanism. The ScriptCenter application, compatible with the WN-3420, provides both scripting and GUI options for configuring tests. This SmartCard is specifically engineered to assess the performance parameters of WAN devices under both extreme and typical traffic load conditions.
The WN-3420 serves the purpose of conducting comparative analyses of WAN switches and access devices, as well as re-qualifying WAN access devices and switches subsequent to firmware upgrades. In terms of connectivity, the WN-3420 is equipped with an RJ-48 interface port supporting up to an E1 (2.048 Mbps) line rate in increments of 64 Kbps. Additional notable features include support for 128 PVC per port frame relay testing at full wire speed, PPP call teardown and setup compliant with RFC 1662, HDLC and custom layer 2 header support through byte-wide VFD override, and protocol support for IP over frame rate (RFC 1490) or IP over PPP. Furthermore, the SmartCard offers support for Annex D, Annex A, and LMI Link Management Protocols.
