The Spirent XLW-3720A is a SmartBits 10 Gigabit Ethernet XENPAK TeraMetrics Module designed for conducting highly scalable line-rate tests on switches, switch routers, and routers. This module effectively generates realistic traffic at various OSI layers and analyzes data frame, packet, and stream metrics for each layer. With the ability to concurrently handle data plane tests and control plane traffic required for metropolitan and enterprise routing, the XLW-3720A provides accurate performance measurements.

At a cost-effective price point, the XLW-3720A facilitates Layer-2 and Layer-3 switch and switch router benchmarking and performance testing. It serves as an excellent platform for functional testing of 10-Gigabit Ethernet hardware and firmware development, as well as for manufacturing and quality assurance applications. The XLW-3720A leverages the XENPAK MSA interface, allowing users to easily switch optical transceivers to support different 10GbE laser wavelengths, reach ranges, and 10GbE serial LAN data link layer protocols. The optical transceiver can be hot-plugged into the XLW test module, enabling convenient configuration changes in the test system. The XLW test module automatically adjusts its configuration to accommodate different optic types.

On the transmit side, the XLW-3720A offers features such as random IFG generation, support for 802.3x flow control commands, independent operation of ports, and mask-based address skipping for simplified test setup. The receive side of the module can analyze up to 64,000 unique streams in histograms, provide real-time analysis, ensure data integrity by checking payload, and includes a 32 MB capture buffer for logging and exporting filtered events to external protocol analysis equipment. By combining the XLW-3720A with other SmartBits modules, users can perform internetworking tests involving 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet, ATM, PPP, Fibre Channel, Frame Relay, or Packet over SONET devices.

The XLW-3720A is capable of negative testing by injecting errored traffic, assessing IP multicast performance, evaluating forwarding performance of devices with a mixture of IPv6 and IPv4 streams on the same port, and subjecting routers to stress by inducing different routing decisions for each frame. Moreover, the XLW-3720A enables the testing of core router performance by simultaneously generating routing events and examining their impact on data plane traffic. Test engineers can gain unique insights into the effects of buffering and queuing mechanisms on packet IP quality of service, all from the key measurements provided by this module.
