The Spirent DLS-8234 is a VDSL2 Wireline Simulator that is optimized for testing of device performance in compliance with ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) specifications. By employing the PE04 cable model as outlined in ETSI TS 101 388, this simulator ensures comprehensive testing coverage for rate adaptive and multi-functional xDSL chipsets. The DLS-8234 consists of a single chassis and offers the option to connect to an external reach extension unit, enabling full auto mode or rate-adaptive testing at distances of up to 10,750 meters.
Control of the DLS-8234 can be achieved using the compatible Control Application or through user control via the ScriptCenter Library tool, which provides the flexibility to create custom, script-based software for convenient operation. Remote configuration and control of the system are facilitated via the GPIB (IEEE 488) or RS-232 interface. These interfaces also enable easy integration of the simulator into larger test systems. The DLS-8234 Control Application runs on a PC computer, allowing users to select the desired simulated length of the wireline loop. Each type of interface is equipped with a corresponding connector on the rear panel of the simulator, and it is important to establish separate connections for each simulator to the control computer.
The DLS-8234 utilizes the ETSI TS 101 388 specification as the foundation for emulating the PE04 wireline loop. It accurately reproduces all the characteristics, including attenuation, phase, and impedance, of the simulated loops, covering the European VDSL2 frequency spectrum. The simulator ensures that attenuation and phase remain consistent for both downstream and upstream signals. It supports full duplex signal transmission and covers the entire DC to 30 MHz frequency band, enabling various DSL technology testing. When combined with the DLS-5500EV VDSL2 Noise Generation System, the DLS-8234 forms a system that is integrated to encompasses the necessary noise files and wireline simulation to facilitate VDSL2 ETSI testing.
The DLS-8234 chassis features two LEDs that provide status indications. The POWER LED, illuminated in green, signals that the chassis is powered on. A red light indicates a self-test failure, while a yellow light denotes the detection of an internal error. The REMOTE LED should remain off after a power-up or reset. Upon receiving a remote message, the LED turns green to indicate valid commands and red if a command generates an error. By utilizing passive circuitry (R, L & C), the DLS-8234 accurately replicates the DC and AC characteristics of twisted pair telephony cable that are made of copper, encompassing velocity (propagation delay), complex impedance, and attenuation of the wireline. Furthermore, external noise impairments can be introduced to the simulator for comprehensive testing capabilities.
